5 Common Causes of Hair Loss in Kota Kinabalu — And What You Can Do About Them

Woman examining hair thinning — common hair loss causes in Kota Kinabalu

Hair loss is one of the most common concerns we see at MU Scalp in Kota Kinabalu. Every week, men and women walk into our centre on Jalan Lintas with the same question: “Why is my hair falling out?”

The answer is rarely simple — because hair loss is rarely caused by just one thing. After treating patients across Sabah for over 20 years, here are the five most common causes we diagnose at our centre.

1. Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Hair Loss)

This is the most common type of hair loss worldwide, and Kota Kinabalu is no exception. In men, it typically shows as a receding hairline or thinning crown. In women, it appears as a widening parting or overall thinning across the top of the scalp.

Androgenetic alopecia is genetic and hormone-related. If your parents or grandparents experienced hair thinning, there’s a higher chance you will too. The good news? When caught early, treatments can slow progression and even stimulate regrowth.

What to do: If you notice gradual thinning that’s getting worse over months, book a scalp analysis to understand your specific pattern and get a diagnosis before it progresses further.

Sabah’s fast-paced lifestyle — juggling work, family, and daily commutes through KK traffic — takes a toll. Telogen effluvium is a condition where physical or emotional stress pushes hair follicles into a resting phase prematurely. The result? Noticeable shedding 2–4 months after a stressful event.

Common triggers include work stress, major life changes, illness, surgery, or even crash dieting. The shedding can be alarming — clumps in the shower, hair on your pillow — but the condition is usually temporary when the underlying stress is addressed.

What to do: If you’ve experienced a stressful period and notice sudden, diffuse shedding, a proper hair loss diagnosis can confirm whether it’s telogen effluvium and rule out other causes.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies

This one surprises many of our clients. Despite Malaysia’s rich food culture, nutritional deficiencies that affect hair health are more common than you’d think. Iron deficiency, low vitamin D (even in sunny Sabah — many of us spend our days indoors), and insufficient protein intake can all contribute to hair thinning.

Women are particularly susceptible, especially after pregnancy or during heavy menstrual periods when iron stores get depleted.

What to do: A consultation at MU Scalp includes an assessment of nutritional factors. Our hair and scalp nutrition therapy addresses deficiencies with targeted supplementation — not generic multivitamins.

4. Postpartum Hair Loss

New mothers in Kota Kinabalu frequently visit our centre 3–6 months after delivery, distressed by sudden hair shedding. This is postpartum hair loss — caused by the dramatic drop in estrogen levels after pregnancy.

During pregnancy, elevated hormones keep hair in its growth phase longer than usual, giving you that thick, lush pregnancy hair. After delivery, all that extra hair enters the shedding phase at once. It can feel devastating, but it’s a normal physiological response.

What to do: While some postpartum shedding resolves on its own within 6–12 months, professional treatment can speed recovery and minimize the visible impact. Our postpartum hair loss solutions are gentle and safe for breastfeeding mothers.

5. Scalp Conditions and Product Buildup

Kota Kinabalu’s tropical humidity means our scalps deal with excess oil, sweat, and product buildup daily. Over time, clogged follicles and an unhealthy scalp environment weaken hair growth. Conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, and fungal infections can also contribute to hair thinning if left untreated.

Many of our clients don’t realize that their regular shampoo isn’t reaching the buildup that’s accumulated on their scalp — especially if they use styling products, dry shampoo, or heavy conditioners regularly.

What to do: A professional scalp deep cleansing removes buildup that regular washing can’t reach, giving your follicles a clean foundation to grow from.

When Should You See a Specialist?

If you’re losing more than 100 hairs per day, noticing a wider parting, seeing your scalp through your hair, or finding clumps in the shower — it’s time to get a professional assessment.

The most important thing to understand about hair loss is this: early treatment works better than late treatment. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to restore what’s been lost.

At MU Scalp in Kota Kinabalu, we start every patient journey with a thorough diagnosis — because the right treatment depends entirely on understanding the right cause.
